Sop eats his meals with many of the same people every day. On the mornings
of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, he eats breakfast with Syn. K'Nish remarked
on this to Sop one Saturday.
"Sop", he said, "every day I see you and Syn eating together. You have
a good thing going there, eh?" And with that he began nudging and winking at
Sop.
"It's not like that", said Sop, "I mean, she's a nice person and all, but
I don't feel that way about her. I eat breakfasts with her because we have
a roughly parallel class schedule. I mean, it's convienient, and it's better
than eating alone."
With this, Sop paused, because he realized that he had
heard much the same thing said by 40-something, desperate people explaining
why they had thrown themselves at, and eventually married, someone whom they
didn't truly love.
